In 1986 Yuriy Sedykh (USSR) sent the Hammer over 284 ft (86m). This record still stands to this day.

The athlete spins around several times before releasing the hammer to great distances of well over 200 feet. Picking up more spped on every rotation is the key to getting a long throw.

What a lot of people don't realise is that the hammer thrower is a very athletic person. They have to be to generate the speed required to throw the hammer to those great distances.

The greatest ever was Yuiry Sedhik who competed for the USSR. The USSR usually had the best athletes in this event, few could challenge them. Yuiry's record still stands from 1986.
